A spring bar tool is the correct instrument for removing and fitting watch straps. If you don't have one, several household items can substitute in an emergency. This guide covers the makeshift options, their limitations, and why a proper tool is worth having before your next strap arrives.
What You're Actually Doing
A spring bar is a small cylindrical pin with a spring-loaded collar at each end. To remove a strap, you must compress one end of the spring bar (pushing it inward toward the centre) while sliding the bar sideways out of the lug hole. The challenge without a proper tool is applying controlled, precise pressure to the spring bar's collar without slipping into the watch case.
Household Substitutes
1. A SIM Card Ejector Pin
The best non-tool substitute. The pin's small diameter fits into the gap between the strap and the lug, contacts the spring bar collar, and allows you to compress it with reasonable precision. Push the pin into the gap at the lug end, feel for the spring bar collar, and press inward while sliding the bar out.
2. A Thin Flat-Head Screwdriver (Jeweller's Size)
The forked end of a spring bar tool is essentially a miniature flat-head screwdriver. A narrow jeweller's screwdriver can compress the spring bar collar from the side. Be careful: the tip can slip and scratch the lug or the case flanks. Cover the case with masking tape first.
3. A Toothpick
A round toothpick (not flat) can fit into the gap and press the spring bar collar. It is less rigid than metal and more likely to snap under pressure, but works for a single removal. Do not reuse — a toothpick that has flexed is less predictable on the second attempt.
4. A Bobby Pin (Hair Pin)
A straightened bobby pin can be bent into a rough fork shape at one end to mimic the spring bar tool's fork. Less precise than dedicated tools but workable for an experienced hand.
All household substitutes carry a higher risk of slipping and scratching the case than a proper spring bar tool. On a valuable watch, accept the inconvenience and wait for the correct tool.
The Process (With Any Substitute)
-
Place the watch face-down on a soft surface — a folded cloth or leather mat. Never on bare glass or hard surfaces.
-
Identify the gap between the strap end and the lug wall. The spring bar collar is visible here as a small silver cylinder.
-
Insert your substitute tool into the gap and make contact with the spring bar collar.
-
Apply gentle inward pressure (toward the centre of the spring bar) while simultaneously pulling the strap away from the lug with your other hand.
-
When the collar compresses sufficiently, the spring bar's end clears the lug hole and the strap releases on that side.
-
Repeat on the other side to fully free the strap.
Get a Spring Bar Tool
A dedicated spring bar tool costs under S$15 and makes strap changes easy, quick, and safe. It should be in every watch owner's kit. The forked end compresses the spring bar collar; the pointed end pries the bar out of the lug hole from below. After one proper tool use, the household substitute methods feel exactly as imprecise as they are.
